When is a tooth considered too damaged for a tooth filling?

When a tooth has a large cavity, a large filling may weaken the overall structure of the tooth. Inlays and onlays provide more structure and strength than a filling. An inlay or onlay may be recommended to you if you have a partially fractured or broken tooth or if the area is too damaged to support a new crown. The result is a natural look which will protect the original tooth below.

Tooth Inlay or Onlay?

If you think you may require an inlay or onlay, please get in touch and we will be able to advise which would work best for you. Generally, the tooth inlay is fitted within the tooth, whereas an onlay sits on top, creating a new surface. Which option we recommend will depend on the existing damage to the tooth.

Common questions for Inlays and Onlays

This is something which can only be determined for certain when you come in for an examination. However, as a general rule, teeth which have a larger cavity may require an inlay/onlay to cover the full missing area and provide a solid chewing surface. Inlays/onlays tend to last much longer than a filling and therefore have a lower chance of damage and infection too.

Usually this will take two appointments. In the first, you will have the decay removed and shaped ready for the inlay/onlay. A mould will then be taken so your inlay/onlay can be made. In the next appointment, this will then be fitted and you’re good to go! We recommend regular hygienist visits to reduce risk of future problems.

They just require the same good dental hygiene that we would recommend to anyone. Brush twice a day, floss regularly and make sure to visit your hygienist to keep your mouth healthy.
