This can be problematic when it comes to placing implants, as the implants require sufficient jawbone to be placed into. Socket preservation takes place after a tooth has been extracted. It is a bone grafting-related procedure that stimulates the empty socket and prevents it from decaying, so that it stays healthy enough for an implant to be placed there.

A sinus lift takes place on the upper jawbone and aims to increase the amount of bone available for a ‘top-tooth’ dental implant. The procedure involves a small bone graft in the localised area, so that there is enough there to place the implant in.

A block bone graft is often used in more severe cases, where the jawbone has receded quite significantly. The treatment involves using bone from elsewhere and placing it in the site of the missing tooth until it integrates with the surrounding bone. This then provides sufficient support for the dental implant.

Following a bone graft, patients will need time to heal and for the bone graft to fuse to the rest of the jawbone before getting an implant. This can take anywhere between 3-12 months and varies from person to person. Once healed however, you will be ready for your implants.
No, pre-implant treatment is only necessary for those without sufficient jawbone to place the implant into. Your scan might reveal that there is plenty of bone to work with, meaning that you can skip this step and go straight to the implant treatment.
