About the treatment

The placing of a single dental implant involves a small surgical procedure, during which a titanium screw (also known as the implant) is inserted into the jawbone, effectively replacing the root of a normal tooth. A connecting piece called an abutment is then added to the top of the screw, and a temporary crown fixed on top during the healing process. Once the jawbone and gum has healed around the new implant (a process which usually takes a few months), we will replace the temporary crown with a permanent one and you can go home with your smile!

Pre-implant treatments and when they are required

When a tooth or multiple teeth have been gone for a long time, the jawbone beneath the missing root can start to shrink from lack of stimulation. This can mean that there is sometimes insufficient jawbone to place the implants into. In cases such as these, we have various pre-implant treatments that can be used to rebuild the bone if it has already shrunk. We can also preserve the socket if you are in the early stages of extraction, allowing you to continue with dental implant treatment afterwards.

Common questions for single implants

No, dental implants are designed to blend in with your natural teeth. We can shape and colour-match your dental implant to complement your smile, so that no one will ever notice that you have an implant.

The healing process is different for everyone, but usually takes between 4-6 months for a full recovery before you can get your permanent crown fitted.

Looking after your dental implants is very similar to looking after normal teeth. They require daily cleaning and brushing. Flossing and mouthwash is also recommended, and you should make regular hygienist appointments to have them professionally cleaned.

Absolutely. Dental implants are a long-term investment, which when looked after correctly, can last you a lifetime. They are the closest you can get to having real teeth again, and they allow you to eat, smile, laugh and speak with confidence. Plus, you could save money on dental bills down the line where gaps in your smile has left your remaining teeth more vulnerable.

It is very rare that people are completely ineligible for a dental implant. Sometimes people require pre-implant treatments, such as bone grafting, to rebuild the jawbone before having an implant, however, this rarely prevents you from being eligible. The only other things that may affect your eligibility is smoking (however, you can alter this by choosing to quit) or certain health issues. You can find out more about whether or not you are suitable during your initial consultation.
