Common Questions for Cosmetic Dentistry

Your plan will be tailored to suit your teeth and your lifestyle, but common procedures will include some form of orthodontic treatment (e.g. Invisalign, ClearCorrect or Cfast-fixed) and teeth whitening. Veneers, composite resin bonding, inlays/onlays and fillings may also be offered to you, if they are suitable. It will ultimately be your decision which recommended treatments you go ahead with.

This is something which can only be determined for certain when you come in for an examination. However, as a general rule, teeth which have a larger cavity may require an inlay/onlay to cover the full missing area and provide a solid chewing surface. Inlays/onlays tend to last much longer than a filling and therefore have a lower chance of damage and infection too.

Although this depends on the amount of wear, porcelain veneers will usually last approximately 10-15 years, with good oral hygiene habits.

Composite resin bonding can last up to 10 years before it needs repairing or replacing. This is assuming you follow good oral hygiene habits and advice given to you by your dentist when it is fitted.

Most teeth are suitable for whitening, however, if you suffer from highly sensitive teeth, whitening can worsen this. You should consider that whitening will not affect fillings, veneers, or crowns. Your dentist will talk you through the affects and help you decide what is best for you.

A crown is usually recommended when there is a large area of damage or staining as it covers the whole tooth. Veneers are used when only the appearance of the front of the tooth is being altered. Your dentist will be able to give you advice on which treatment would be most suitable.

In short, no! Adult orthodontics, for cosmetic purposes, are becoming more common, and you should never feel embarrassed or nervous to have a procedure as an adult. We carry out cosmetic and orthodontic procedures for adults young and old, on a regular basis.
